England Ladies World Cup Qualifier

England Ladies 8 - Malta Ladies 0 at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool
Played in a howling gale, England ladies had trouble against a solidly defensively Maltese side determined not to suffer a repeat of their recent 13-0 hammering against Spain. England struggled in front of goal, failed to take numeorus chances and were unable to make the most of Malta being a player down for much of the second half.
A very entertaining game to watch but with goal difference likely to be a big factor in final World Cup qualification, coach Hope Powell and hat-trick hero Fara Williams (pictured) were very despondent at the aftermatch press conference.

Double Gold For Poland!
Newly crowned world under 21 beach volleyball champion Monica Brzostek from Poland declared Blackpool “the most wonderful place in the world” as she celebrated winning the gold medal in the prestigious FIVB world tournament held on Blackpool’s St Chad’s Headland over the weekend.
Brzostek and her partner Kinga Kolosinka overcame title favourites Danielle Remmers and Michelle Stiekema in thrilling 52 minute final that went to a tie break (21-18, 17-21, 15-11).
A Bronze medallist last year, Brzostek said: “I am really happy to win this title as I am 20 years old now and this was my last opportunity.”
When asked about Blackpool as a venue for the competition, she said: “It’s a really nice place, all the people are very friendly and now, having won the gold medal, it is the most wonderful place in the whole world right now.
It was a good day all round for Poland as male pair Michal Kadziola and Jakub Szalankiewicz won the men’s final beating Brazilians Alvaro Filho and Vitor Gonsalves in straight sets 23-21 and 21-19.
Kolosinka and Kadziola also picked up the Swatch award for best female and male player in the tournament respectively.
